Good Photography is a happy mixture of various arts and sciences. The artistic side of photography is in Composition, which is how to arrange as attractively as possible the view that you see through the lens. This arrangement is done in three ways; you move things around, you ask people to move, or you move yourself. You will be surprised what a difference moving a few steps can make to a picture. For example, it is a good habit to always take pictures of small animals or kids at their eye level. You do this by bending down; this makes your viewer see the old world from your subject’s perspective – always a good thing to remember in photography!
Other smart tips for good composition- remember the photograph-world is flatter than the real world, and depth is less easily imaginable than in the real world. So take care not to have that lamppost sticking out of someone’s head. It might look okay in the real world, because you can see that the lamppost is actually behind your subject. But in a picture, it might look like someone has nailed your poor subject in the head with a large lamppost.
The scientific and technical aspect can be called Exposure in its totality. This has basically two sub areas, exposure per se, and focus. Exposure is the amount of light that is captured by the film and depends on three factors, the “speed” of the film, the size of the lens or its f-stop, and the shutter speed. Focus is the sharpness of the subject of your photograph, while depth-of-field is the sharpness of focus of the background. Focus depends on the f-stop as well as on the magnification of the lens.
All these elements, especially exposure, have some room for editing in the film processing stage. Thanks to digital photography, and the elimination of need for a dark room, all the editing could be done by software on one’s home computer.
